Oracy at Evergreen

At Evergreen, we recognize the vital role that oracy plays in a child’s development. Oracy, the ability to express oneself fluently and effectively, is fundamental to learning and personal growth. We integrate speaking and listening activities across our curriculum to enhance our children’s communication skills, confidence, and critical thinking. By fostering a culture of dialogue and discussion, we prepare our students to articulate their ideas clearly and engage meaningfully with others, both inside and outside the classroom.

We focus on three key areas of learning to speak with our children:

  • Learning through talk
  • Learning to talk
  • Learning to listen

The focus on effective oracy is extended beyond the classroom to all areas of school life. Children are supported to use their communication skills across the school by adults who orally model appropriate sentence stems e.g. lunch time and office staff, and visual communication prompts which are placed where our children are most likely to need them.  The knowledge and use of a range of oracy skills supports the development of our children’s confidence and self-esteem, building a greater sense of community and belonging in school.
